SHAKE SHACK

The ultimate dream for any truffle lover is to embark on a digging adventure for one of the world’s most-prized culinary delicacies. Shake Shack brought truffle hunting stateside with an immersive OOH campaign in celebration of its White Truffle menu – its most elevated menu yet. Coming up with this idea during my time heading up the Grand Visual team was certainly a career highlight working closely with brand marketing team directly.

Shake Shack’s White Truffle Burger Campaign Brings a Digital Twist to DOOH in New York

Shake Shack turned heads—and whetted appetites—in New York City with a unique Digital Out-of-Home (DOOH) campaign to promote its indulgent White Truffle Burger. The campaign combined dynamic DOOH visuals with an interactive mobile experience, inviting customers to join a digital “Truffle Hunt” via their smartphones.

A Blend of Gourmet Flavor and Tech Innovation

Known for its premium fast-casual offerings, Shake Shack wanted to spotlight the luxury of its White Truffle Burger while engaging customers in a memorable and playful way. The campaign made clever use of DOOH screens across New York City, featuring eye-catching visuals of the burger alongside a call-to-action that invited passersby to participate in a mobile-powered treasure hunt.

How It Worked: The Truffle Hunt

  1. Interactive Posters: DOOH screens and posters in high-traffic areas displayed a QR code alongside tantalizing images of the White Truffle Burger. Curious onlookers could scan the code with their phones.
  2. Joining the Hunt: Scanning the QR code transported users to an interactive mobile experience—the Truffle Hunt—where they could “search” for virtual truffles scattered across the city.
  3. Exclusive Rewards: Participants who successfully completed the hunt were rewarded with a voucher for a free or discounted White Truffle Burger, redeemable at their nearest Shake Shack location.

Strategic Placement for Maximum Engagement

Shake Shack deployed the campaign across prime locations in New York, such as Times Square, subway stations, and popular pedestrian areas. These high-visibility spots ensured the campaign reached thousands of potential customers daily, especially food enthusiasts looking for their next indulgence.

Why It Worked

The Shake Shack White Truffle Burger campaign was a standout success due to its blend of creativity, interactivity, and gourmet appeal. Here’s what made it effective:

  • Interactive Engagement: By encouraging customers to interact with the campaign through their phones, Shake Shack bridged the gap between the physical and digital worlds, creating a seamless and fun user experience.
  • Sense of Adventure: The Truffle Hunt added a gamified element, tapping into consumers’ love for novelty and rewards.
  • Gourmet Appeal: The campaign’s sleek visuals emphasized the luxury of the White Truffle Burger, appealing to customers’ desire for premium dining experiences.
  • DOOH Effectiveness: The dynamic, larger-than-life visuals of the burger ensured the campaign stood out in bustling urban environments, driving foot traffic to Shake Shack locations.

A Model for Food Marketing Innovation

Shake Shack’s White Truffle Burger campaign showcased the potential of combining DOOH with mobile interactivity to create engaging, memorable marketing experiences. By turning a simple burger promotion into a city-wide treasure hunt, Shake Shack captured attention, drove sales, and reinforced its reputation as a leader in fast-casual innovation.

This campaign not only sold burgers—it set a benchmark for how food brands can use technology to connect with customers in the digital age.
