GOOGLE FRONT ROW

Two time Cannes Lion Award, Clio Award and Eurobest Grand Prix winning Google 'Front Row' campaign

The Google Front Row Project was an innovative initiative that merged sports and technology, giving fans a unique way to feel more connected to live events. Launched during the highly anticipated Manchester United versus Liverpool football match in March 2014, the project utilized Google+ Hangouts and large digital signage to create an interactive fan experience.

What Was the Google Front Row Project?

The concept allowed Manchester United fans from around the world to “attend” the match virtually. Using Google+ Hangouts, fans could stream themselves live during the game, and their faces were displayed on the perimeter LED boards at Old Trafford stadium. This created the sensation of being “in the front row,” even for fans located thousands of miles away.

How It Worked

Fans participated by submitting their entries via Manchester United’s official Google+ page. Selected fans received an invitation to join the live Hangout during the game.

During the match, the fans’ live video feeds appeared on the LED advertising boards around the pitch. This unique integration enabled virtual fans to “watch” the game as though seated at the stadium.

The project highlighted fans from diverse locations, emphasizing Manchester United’s worldwide following. It brought together supporters from countries as far-flung as the United States, India, and Australia.

Impact and Reception

The Google Front Row Project was a groundbreaking blend of technology and sports, showcasing the potential of augmented fan engagement. For the fans involved, it was a dream come true—offering an unprecedented level of connection to their favorite team.

The initiative also marked a pivotal moment in digital marketing for sports, demonstrating how technology can expand accessibility and enhance the fan experience. It was particularly praised for bringing international fans closer to the action and fostering a sense of community, even from a distance.

While this activation was a one-time event, it served as a template for future innovations in fan interaction, paving the way for other virtual and AR-based experiences in sports.
